With great sadness and enduring respect, we announce the death of our cherished board member, Peter Hartman. Peter passed away in his hometown of Växjö, Sweden.
Peter’s journey through American business and entrepreneurship began in 1980 with Gunnebo, a Swedish company with U.S. offices in Chicago and Bristol, Connecticut. By the mid-1980s, Peter was in Southern California, leading the sales and marketing of several international high-tech companies.
In the early 1990s, Peter set-off on his entrepreneurial adventure, founding PME & Associates, helping Swedish high-tech companies establish their U.S. operations. The next decade found Peter applying his business acumen and financial rigor to advise individuals on financial planning and coach business owners on growth. By the mid-2000s Peter was working in Santa Barbara where he fast became a fixture in the business community.
Peter joined the board of directors at MIT Enterprise Forum, Central Coast on the cusp of the global financial crisis. He soon stepped up to helm our organization as Chair and was tireless in his effort to reinforce and grow the greater Santa Barbara area as a “Techtopia” for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Peter was educated in Sweden where he studied mechanical engineering and marine engineering, receiving his BA from Kalmar Maritime Academy of Linneaus University. It seems even then, Peter was destined to reach Santa Barbara with its concentration of technology companies and avid sailors.
Peter was a kind and patient soul, avid sailor, and lover of the ocean. After he retired in 2016, he would often send us email updates from his travels and his home in Sweden. We will forever remember Peter’s kindness, encouragement and warm spirit.
